Every Easter,
thousands of bunnies and chicks are acquired on impulse, as part
of Easter celebrations and usually as presents for children. Just
a few months later, many of these animals end up dead, abandoned
at shelters, ”set free,” or ignored in backyard hutches.
Most parents don’t realize that companion rabbits and chickens
can live ten years or more, are not "low maintenance"
and need an active adult caretaker.

If
you know someone who is considering purchasing a bunny or chick
for a child this Easter, inform them of the kind of commitment needed
to care for a live rabbit or chicken and encourage them to consider
a toy instead. For adults who have thoroughly researched rabbit
or chicken care and have decided to share their home with one of
these animals, urge them to adopt one of the many who are in desperate
need of a safe, indoor home, from a shelter or rescue organization.
