A good idea is spreading

This week, the Port Orange City Council agreed to move forward with a draft spay/neuter ordinance.
If adopted, Port Orange would join Volusia County and the neighboring communities of Daytona Beach, Holly Hill, South Daytona, DeLand, Ponce Inlet and Ormond Beach in having ordinances encouraging owners of dogs and cats to spay or neuter their animals.
The ordinance in Port Orange would require all healthy cats and dogs to be sterilized, although individuals would be able to obtain a license to breed animals. There would also be an exception for registered show dogs and cats.
As many as 20,000 dogs and cats are killed each year in Volusia County. The draft ordinance is aimed at lowering that horrible number, and to save money. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, “Port Orange currently spends about $50,000 annually putting cats and dogs to death.”
Communities in Volusia County have taken the lead in Florida in the battle against dog and cat overpopulation.
Just a quick mention, Jacksonville Fl. (Duval county) has a city funded trap and realease program for stray dogs and cats.. They fix them, give them their shots and some flea medicine… and turn them back loose. Saves the space in the shelters, saves them money, and saves from killing them, and making litters of more. Less problems and less starving animals on the streets.. Some are lucky enough to be taken in, but rarely do people spay and neuter in time…
