One lucky pig

An article in last week’s Daytona Beach News-Journal described how residents of a Palm Coast neighborhood upset at wild pigs digging up their lawns have hired a trapper to “remove” the pigs. A group of 12- a female and 12 piglets- have been trapped already.

We found a much happier story in the Vero Beach Press-Journal, about a wild pig who has made herself at home near the Sebastian Municipal Golf Course. Employees and golfers have taken to the female pig, who they have named “Oinky.” City Manager Al Minner was quoted in the article, “From time to time, wildlife can sometimes get in and damage the greens, but we have to work with it.” There are no plans to harm the pig; “We’ll leave it be,” Minner said. Perhaps his respectful attitude is a result of what happened last time someone tried to remove a pig from the golf course. The article described how several years ago, the city allowed a bow hunter to kill a pig who was digging up the golf course. The hunter “shot an arrow through the pig’s neck, and the bleeding, squealing animal then ran across the course.”

Please send a quick note to Mr. Minner and thank him for his wonderful attitude about Oinky. But politely ask him to discourage people from feeding her (feeding a wild animal is never a good idea).
