Animals make poor holiday gifts

Today’s Sun-Sentinel included an important article about giving animals as gifts. The article began, “It might seem like a great holiday gift: a cute puppy or kitten under the Christmas tree or wrapped up for Hanukkah. But that picture-perfect present could be a big mistake, say animal welfare advocates.”
The article made it clear that welcoming an animal into your home is a decision that should never be taken lightly. Unfortunately, this message has not reached everyone. The paper reported that animal shelters in Broward and Palm Beach County “typically receive hundreds more animals, including purebred puppies” in the months following the holidays.
For people who are determined to give an animal as a gift, the article noted that animal shelters often sell gift certificates where a family can come to the shelter after the holidays and adopt a dog or cat.
