There are few encounters with wild animals in Florida that are as exciting as catching a glimpse of a dolphin in the ocean. Dolphin-watching tours can be a good way for people to see these magnificent animals, and can teach important lessons. For example, watching dolphins in their natural habitat can help people recognize the cruelty of keeping dolphins in captivity. Unfortunately, some tour operators have been caught feeding and chasing dolphins for the benefit of tourists.

To address some of these problems, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has launched a program called “Dolphin SMART” that will, according to the Key West Citizen, “recognize and promote” responsible dolphin watching trips in Florida waters. To be included in the program, tour operators would commit to stay at least 50 yards away from dolphins, to “move away slowly if the dolphins shows signs of disturbance” and to “refrain from swimming with, touching or feeding wild dolphins.”

NOAA will launch a website soon to promote the program.
