Lucky duck

Of the thousands of ducks and other migratory birds who have been shot in Florida this hunting season, one bird not only survived but has helped to highlight the cruelty of hunting. If you haven’t heard the story, here’s a summary: a female ring-necked duck was shot on January 15 by local hunter Dale Tadlock, who brought the bird home and placed her in a refrigerator. Mr. Tadlock has explained he was going to “clean it” later. But the next day when the hunter’s wife opened the fridge, the duck “looked up at her.” The woman, who was understandably shocked, promptly brought the injured bird to an animal hospital. The duck is now at the Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary where she is being treated for a broken wing and leg.
The story was first reported by the Tallahassee Democrat and has since grabbed national media attention, putting a face on hunting’s individual victims.
We hope that this incident will convince Mr. Tadlock to hang up his shotgun, but if you’d like to give him a polite push you can contact him at: dale@tadlockroofing.com (Dale owns a roofing company in Tallahassee).
