Vivisectors: edit your resume

Last week, Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty announced that a former employee of a major animal testing company would not become the new Manager of Orange County’s Animal Services. This is great news and a wonderful victory for the many activists who contacted the county to protest the consideration of Robert Ridgway, DVM.
For 10 years, Mr. Ridgway worked for Covance, one of the world’s largest animal testing companies. In Arizona, Covance has encountered stiff public opposition to its plans to construct a new research facility in the city of Chandler. In response, Covance has mounted an expensive public relations campaign. But it is interesting that Covance, and the larger animal research community, chose not to come to the defense of Mr. Ridgway in Orlando.
Mr. Ridgway’s story also sends an interesting message that previous employment in animal research can be a black mark in future job searches.
