Police step in to help wild pigs
March 9th, 2007 by admin
Wild pigs, like all animals, are protected from cruel treatment under Florida’s animal cruelty statute. Unfortunately, they do not always receive the protection they deserve. Last week, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office got it right when they made arrests in two separate incidents.
In the first case, an officer found two female pigs crammed into a small cage in the back of a truck. The animals had been left in the cage overnight; one of the pigs had just given birth to seven piglets. The owner of the truck, who claimed that he went fishing and didn’t have time to “kill the pigs,” was charged with cruelty to animals. (The mother pig and piglets were taken to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast; the other adult pig was released into the woods.)
In the second case, a sheriff’s lieutenant pulled over a truck after noticing a young wild pig “hanging from the side of the pickup truck bed.” The driver was charged with cruelty to animals. Sadly, the pig was taken to a local veterinarian but had to be euthanized.
Please write to Martin County Sheriff Bob Crowder and thank the sheriff’s office for making the arrests. Their actions helped end the suffering of the animals.
