New Port Richey - A chicken-friendly city

This week, the City of New Port Richey took a stand against the cruel confinement of chickens in factory farms. The city council unanimously passed a resolution opposing “battery cage egg production, based on the inherent cruelty of confining egg-laying hens in battery cages.” The resolution also encourages consumers, “not to purchase eggs produced by caged hens.”
On egg farms in Florida, female birds are housed in huge warehouses in rows of bare wire cages called “battery cages”. Four to six hens are crammed into each cage, and they are unable to stretch their wings, walk or even lie down comfortably.
The resolution is the first of its kind in Florida, and is even more impressive when you consider that the Tampa Bay area (New Port Richey is north of Tampa/St. Petersburg) is the major egg producing area in the state. (Did you know that there are over 10 million chickens in Florida’s egg industry!)
