“Unforgettable Elephants”

This Sunday, PBS’ Nature program will feature “Unforgettable Elephants,” award-winning filmmaker Martyn Colbeck’s documentary about the life of one family of African elephants.

elephants.jpgThe description of the program on PBS’ website begins, “We have seen them dressed in costumes and dancing at circuses, living solitary lives at zoos . . . . But the largest land animals live a life that is completely foreign to us when left to their own in the wild.”

The filmmaker spent nearly two decades following an elephant matriarch and her close-knit family. The program description continues, “Elephants, the largest land animals on the planet, are among the most exuberantly expressive of creatures. Joy, anger, grief, compassion, love: the finest emotions reside within these hulking masses. Through years of research, scientists have found that elephants are capable of complex thought and deep feeling. In fact, the emotional attachment elephants form toward family members may rival ours.”

“Unforgettable Elephants” will air on Sunday, April 1 at 8pm (EST) on PBS.
