A notice in today’s Stuart News mentioned that The Council on Aging of Martin County now offers a vegetarian option for its Meals on Wheels customers in Martin County. The program delivers hot meals to the homes of senior citizens in need. The paper noted, “you don’t have to be a vegetarian to order these meals.”

Send a quick thank-you to The Council on Aging of Martin County for their thoughtfulness in offering veggie options: svickers@coamc.org.

Does your local senior meal program offer vegetarian meals? You can find a program near you at the website of The Meals On Wheels Association of America: www.mowaa.org. If they do not, encourage them to offer nutritionally-balanced meat and dairy-free options. If you can, volunteer to help with the program. (You may want to mention that vegetarians tend to live longer than nonvegetarians.)

The Meals On Wheels Association of America is also promoting an initiative called “We All Love Our Pets,” to encourage meal programs to provide food for companion animals as well. The initiative resulted from the discovery that many “senior recipients of Meals On Wheels were feeding their food to their pets.” Click here for more information.
