This week Florida lawmakers adopted a resolution recognizing the week of June 17-23, 2007, as “Humane Society Appreciation Week” in Florida.

The resolution, which was introduced by Representative Faye Culp and Senator James King*, recognized the important work of Florida’s 48 humane societies. The resolution notes the “estimated 800,000 or more unwanted and stray animals” who are killed each year in Florida and the important role of “spay/neuter campaigns as a preventive and responsible measure for controlling animal overpopulation in Florida.” Visit our website to read the full resolution.

Please thank Rep. Culp and Sen. King for introducing this worthwhile resolution.

There are only a few weeks remaining in the 2007 legislative session in Tallahassee. Some pro-animal bills have made progress; others remain stuck in committee. Click here for details on how you can help support animal protection legislation in Florida.

*Senator Jim King is also championing legislation that would allow cemeteries to bury urns containing the ashes of companion animals along with their guardians. (Sen. King wants to be buried with “Valentine,” his Labrador retriever who he has described as “probably one of the most loving, incredible breathing things that I’ve ever known.”)
