Wait a minute! Hunters in Florida are killing coyotes with snares and bullets so that the coyotes won’t kill the pigs and deer that the hunters want to kill? An article in Monday’s Miami Herald, “Wily coyotes invade Florida, stalk animals,” highlights the inconsistent arguments often used by hunters to defend hunting. In order to placate the majority of Americans who morally oppose hunting, hunters use key phrases like “population control” as a pretense for sport-killing. A common excuse to kill animals like wild pigs in Florida is that there are too many of them. But, according to the Herald article, hunters are upset because coyotes are killing the animals before they can. They’re shooting the coyotes so they can shoot the deer and pigs. It’s bizarre.
