Dog racing industry sees slots as their last, best hope
June 9th, 2007 by admin
In 2005, voters in Miami-Dade County chose not to allow slot machines at the county’s three parimutuel facilities, including the Flagler Dog Track. Since the vote, gambling proponents have been open about their intention to bring the issue back to the voters for another try.
At a meeting next Tuesday (June 12), the Governmental Operations and Environment Committee of the County Commission will vote on a resolution to put the issue before voters, for a second time, on January 29, 2008.
For the struggling Flagler Dog Track, slots may be their only hope of staying in business. For greyhounds suffering in the racing industry, we hope that the committee will vote against asking voters if they’ve changed their mind about casino gambling.
Please contact the following members of the Governmental Operations and Environment Committee and urge them not to support placing the slot machine question before voters in 2008.
