Most businesses protect their property with locks, fences, lights, cameras and security guards. Unfortunately, a few still turn to dogs. The life of a “guard” dog is one of loneliness and neglect. These dogs suffer through all types of weather extremes.

Heartless businesses in Fort Myers looking to rent a guard dog now will have to look a little harder. Last week, a judge in Lee County fined Jackie Jarrett, the owner of a local guard dog business, nearly $9,000 and forbid her from ever owning a dog or a dog business again. Officers with Lee County Animal Services had found her guard dogs in deplorable conditions, without adequate food, water or shelter. (Jarrett also claimed she “didn’t realize” that her dogs had mange.) She was charged with 48 violations, including animal cruelty and failure to license the dogs.

If you know of a guard dog who is being abused or neglected, please take action. You may be the animal’s only hope. Please visit our website for more information about reporting animal abuse.
