Thank you Governor!

Yesterday, Governor Charlie Crist vetoed legislation (SB 900) that would have made it nearly impossible for citizens and grassroots groups in Florida to organize constitutional ballot initiatives. In 2002, citizens used the initiative process to ban the intensive confinement of pigs in gestation crates, one of factory farming’s worst abuses.
SB 900 was championed by the Florida Chamber of Commerce who criticized the supposed power of “special interests.” In 2002, over 2.6 million Floridians voted in favor of the historic ballot initiative that outlawed gestation crates. These are the “special interests” that the Chamber is concerned about: citizens of Florida who care about animals and the environment. (Instead, we think it’s the big businesses represented on the Board of the Florida Chamber of Commerce who have too much influence in Tallahassee.)
Please thank the governor for his veto.
