Last week the St. Petersburg Times ran an article about a woman who moved to Tampa from New York and found Florida to be a very unfriendly place for vegans. Her experience encouraged her to found New Tampa Vegans, a great group for local vegetarians/vegans.

In the article, veganism is presented as a difficult diet, and frankly, not very appealing. The tone of the article is more likely due to the writer than the subjects, but it’s important for activists to remember that, in the wise words of Vegan Outreach, “The way veganism is presented to a potential vegan is of major importance.” Vegan Outreach explains, “Fostering the impression that ‘it’s so hard to be vegan–animal products are in everything,’ and emphasizing animal products where the connection to animal suffering is tenuous, works against this by allowing most to ignore us and causing others to give up the whole process out of frustration.” Click here to read more essays by Vegan Outreach about activism and veganism.
