Pigs in Florida need your help, again
July 11th, 2007 by admin
In late June, the governor of Oregon signed a measure prohibiting gestation crates- narrow, metal cages where breeding pigs on factory farms are kept for most of their lives. The crates are so small that the animals can’t even turn around. Oregon is the third state to prohibit gestation crates; in 2006 voters in Arizona enacted a ban and in 2002, more than two and half million Floridians voted to amend the state constitution to end the cruel confinement of breeding pigs.
Unfortunately, ever since the November 2002 vote, politicians have criticized the “pregnant pigs” amendment, denigrated the suffering of pigs on factory farms, and threatened to repeal the amendment.
Last week, the Lakeland Ledger reported that Allan Bense, former House speaker and the Chairman of the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission is “willing to look at removing” the amendment. This is significant because the Commission has the authority to add questions to the November 2008 general election ballot.
Please contact Chairman Bense and the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission and urge them not to revisit the gestation crate amendment. Remind them that 2 1/2 million voters chose to protect pregnant pigs!
