You may not have heard, but Governor Charlie Crist has proclaimed July 31 as “Florida Animal Preparedness Day” (according to the Tallahassee Democrat). We didn’t learn much about the proclamation from the Governor’s office, but it’s a nice reminder for the millions of Floridians who share their homes with dogs, cats and other animals to prepare NOW for a weather emergency.

Do your companion animals wear collars with up-to-date information (current vaccinations, contact information)? If you plan to evacuate during a hurricane, do you have a sturdy carrier or leash for your companion animal, and a destination (home of a friend or relative, animal-friendly hotel) in mind? If you plan to stay at home during a storm, make sure you have enough food and water not only for yourself, but for your animals as well.
