Congressmen work to curb trade in exotic snakes
September 7th, 2007 by admin
This week, U.S. Representatives Alcee Hastings and Ron Klein sent a letter to the Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service requesting a prohibition on the importation of Burmese pythons into the country, as well as a ban on interstate transport. (Click here to read the letter.)
Their letter noted that over 67,000 Burmese pythons have been imported into the United States since 2000. Congressman Hastings wrote, “The Federal government must act immediately and appropriately to address this escalating danger.” In recent months, pythons discovered in the Everglades, or in residential neighborhoods, have made headlines. It is clear that exotic snakes are a threat to Florida’s ecosystem. It is also clear that the exotic pet trade is at the root of the problem. It remains easy to purchase exotic reptiles in Florida. Many of these animals end up doomed to live in deplorable conditions, or are abandoned after they become too expensive to care for.
Please thank Congressmen Hastings and Klein for their efforts in ending the irresponsible trade in these animals.

A ban, if enacted, would go a long way toward ensuring the welfare of animals and the safety of our communities. Please contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and urge them to follow the recommendations of Congressmen Hastings and Klein.
