“There are good souls in the universe”

In Sunday’s Sarasota Herald Tribune, columnist Eric Ernst wrote about a vote by the Sarasota County Planning Commission to allow the Wildlife Center of Venice to continue its work helping injured and sick animals. But the column was really about why many people feel a responsibility to help animals and what is means for us to do so.
He writes, “Each of us would like to think we’re the type who would stop the car and help the turtle cross the road. We know we would want to do something when we see a bird wrapped in fishing line, caught on a wire.” Mr. Ernst suggests that a guilty conscience may motivate some people to act, but regardless of the reason it is good news that there are people who will make an extra effort to help animals.
During the zoning discussion, the meeting room was packed. This is an encouraging sign not only for Florida’s animals who desperately need our help, but for our human neighbors as well. As Mr. Ernst writes, “people who are callous to the plight of animals are equally indifferent to the suffering of humans.”
