tyke.jpgRingling Bros. isn’t due to perform in Orlando until January, but the Orange County Sheriff’s Office is prepared. Today’s Orlando Sentinel reported the purchase of 14 .499-caliber “elephant guns” that fire half-inch-diameter bullets. Sheriff spokesperson Jim Solomons explained, “The sole purpose for this weapon is large or exotic animals.” He also referred to the 1994 incident in which Tyke the elephant killed her trainer and escaped from a circus in Honolulu: “They had to go through a whole lot of bullets, and all they did was aggravate the animal and put it through needless suffering before they were able to bring it down.” (Tyke died after being shot 86 times.)
