New reptile rules already having an impact

On January 1st, a new rule came into effect that requires individuals in Florida who purchase a python, anaconda, Nile monitor lizard or one of several other dangerous reptiles to obtain a $100 permit. These “reptiles of concern” must also be microchipped for identification purposes.
The new rules were passed last year in Tallahassee with overwhelming support, and appear to already have made a positive impact. An article in Monday’s Tallahassee Democrat noted, “Most pet stores in Tallahassee have stopped carrying Burmese pythons and other reptiles of concern because of the stricter rules.”
Also on Monday the Orlando Sentinel published an editorial in support of the new rules. The paper concluded, “Some of these animals used to be bought on a whim. No more.”
