Abuse just like during the Middle Ages
February 1st, 2008 by admin
This weekend the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire will wrap-up at the Alachua County Fairgrounds. The fair promises that visitors will “experience the Middle Ages.” The Middle Ages was- among many other things- a time of widespread slavery, horrible warfare, famine and disease. So it’s fitting that the Medieval Faire would include captive elephants and camels.
Please contact the City of Gainesville, Division of Cultural Affairs, who produce the annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire. Ask them to leave elephants and camels out of next year’s event. Explain that abusive treatment of animals is one thing we can leave to history.

During the winter months, some of America’s most depressing animal acts come to Florida to perform at county fairs. One of the worst of these exploitive shows, the Rosaire-Zoppe Chimpanzees, will be at the Charlotte County Fair beginning tonight. The Sarasota Herald Tribune described the act as “chimpanzees on horseback,” and that just about summarizes the show. The sad chimpanzees in the show never get to act like true chimpanzees.
Please encourage the fair not to invite the Rosaire-Zoppe Chimpanzees back in the future. Explain that there is nothing educational about watching chimpanzees dressed in costumes being pulled around a ring by a leash around their necks. These amazing animals suffer for our amusement.
