Meat-free parenting

If you shop at Publix, next time you’re in the store pick up a copy of their free “GreenWise Market” publication. The March issue features a how-to about cooking artichokes, an article about composting kitchen scraps (you can’t compost meat and dairy!) and some interesting recipes. But what we were really excited to see was the article, “Junior Vegetarians.” The article begins with a strong statement, “Kids who avoid meat can get all the nourishment they need to grow up healthy and strong,” and continues with a description of dinner at the home of a Florida mother and her vegan-since-birth daughter. The article mentions www.healthyschoollunches.org, where you can find tips on advocating for vegetarian choices in school cafeterias, recommends a few cookbooks (Raising Vegetarian Children, and The Teen’s Vegetarian Cookbook), and includes some good advice for parents on keeping vegetarian and vegan children healthy and happy.
