Each year, 26 million lunches are served to Broward County public school students. And beginning this week, some of those lunches will include a vegetarian burger.

gardenburger.jpgThe Miami Herald reported on Tuesday that the school district has added a new vegetarian option- Gardenburgers- to menus at several schools as part of a pilot program. The low-fat, high-fiber veggie burgers were added not only because they are healthier than hot dogs and cheeseburgers, but because students demanded the change (according to the Herald, “The district is introducing the meat substitute as a way to satisfy kids’ requests for more vegetarian fare at lunch.”). This is encouraging news.

Please send a quick note to The School Board of Broward County’s Food and Nutrition Services department and thank them for responding so positively to student needs.

Vegetarian and vegan entrees have become increasingly available in school districts around the state. Pinellas County had the nation’s top-rated school lunches in the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s 2007 School Lunch Report Card (Miami-Dade County and Volusia County schools also received high marks).
