Today, the Marco Island Sun-Times reported that a “cat-killing coyote” has been caught at a local golf course.

The Island Country Club set live traps to catch coyotes after people living on the golf course complained about cats disappearing.

It is true that coyotes sometimes kill cats, but the “missing” cats on Marco Island could just as well have been hit by a car, or simply moved to a different home in the neighborhood.

One resident arrogantly told the paper, “They belong on a preserve. They don’t belong here.”

The paper claimed that the coyote “was taken to a preserve,” which is a tale that trappers commonly tell (most likely, the animal was killed soon after being captured).

There are very good reasons why all cats should be indoor cats. In this case, people who allowed their “pets” to roam the island are responsible for the death of an innocent coyote.

The golf course is continuing to set live traps, in hopes of capturing additional coyotes. Please write to the Island Country Club and urge them to end their efforts to catch coyotes. Tell them that coyotes are not a threat to human safety, and that a more sensible solution would be to educate residents about responsible “pet” care.
