Mystery of the dumped dead rats has been solved

Earlier this month, dozens of dead rats were found on the side of a road in Ocala, along with plastic containers filled with wood shavings. Were they cast-off from a research laboratory? Were the carcasses a health threat? This week we learned that the rats instead came from a failed reptile business. According to an article in the Gainesville Sun, Christopher Stephens, an Ocala firefighter, admitted to sheriff’s deputies that his business had gone sour and the rats “began to die.” Stephens was arrested and charged with felony littering. It may be impossible to determine how the rats died, but we are pleased that Mr. Stephens is being held at least partially responsible for their deaths.
