Do your companion animals know where they live?

Yesterday’s St. Petersburg Times told the story of “Sammy,” a 2-year-old golden retriever who got loose and roamed the streets for three days before being picked up by the SPCA Tampa Bay. Sammy’s tag had broken off, and although he was microchipped, the chip had not been updated with the address of the dog’s current home.
Two weeks passed, and Sammy was put up for adoption, before a shelter employee tracked down Sammy’s guardians. He’s a lucky dog. The story is an important reminder to make sure your companion animal is microchipped for identification and that the information is updated if you move.
To update a microchip, you need to contact the microchip company (by phone or through their web site). Your veterinarian or local animal shelter can help you to scan your dog or cat’s microchip and access the name of the company that supplied it.
