Two of Florida’s largest newspapers condemn the exotic pet trade

In an editorial in today’s paper titled “Ban exotic pets,” the Miami Herald made clear what they feel about people who own tigers, pythons and other exotic animals as pets. The newspaper concluded, “The Legislature should restrict the kind of animals that private individuals can own. Any creatures that are dangerous or are a threat to Florida’s ecosystem should be banned.”
Last week the Orlando Sentinel expressed similar sentiments (”Florida hasn’t done enough to stop exotic species,” August 18th editorial). “Florida’s lawmakers need to look at much tougher rules on exotic-animal ownership,” the paper wrote. “The blame lies not only with irresponsible pet owners and breeders — though they deserve a lot of it — but with lawmakers who have failed to adequately deal with the problem.”
Writing a letter to the editor of the Herald or Sentinel in support of their editorials would be a great way to keep the issue in the public eye. Click here to start.
