Sorry Vinny, the elephant didn’t help

People running for public office do some crazy things. On Monday morning, Vinny Angiolillo, a candidate for Collier County sheriff, spent half an hour on the back of an elephant waving to people driving to work. Mr. Angiolillo looked ridiculous.
The elephant, named “Makia,” was captured in Africa in the 1970s and now lives a depressing life, rented-out to circuses, fairs and apparently anyone else with money to burn. On Monday, she was led by a man wielding a bullhook.
The stunt may have been a good way to get attention, but it’s doubtful that it translated into votes (Angiolillo definitely lost the vote of anyone who cares about animals). This morning the results of the election were official. Vinny received 1,951 votes, about 5% of the vote. The winner, Kevin Rambosk, won the race to be Collier’s next sheriff with more than 70% of the vote!
