iguana.jpgYesterday, the City of Cape Coral passed a resolutiion urging the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission to take measures to “control the possession, distribution, release and propagation of iguanas throughout the state.” The resolution was proposed by Council Member William Deile.

As the number of feral iguanas increase in communities in south Florida, conflicts with humans are also increasing. Sadly, we are learning of more incidents in which people try to solve iguana “problems” in cruel ways. Florida’s growing population of feral iguanas began with the pet industry. We think it is appropriate to target the sale and possession of iguanas as part of the solution.

Cape Coral became the first city on Florida’s west coast to pass such a resolution. On the east coast, Monroe County, Palm Beach County and the City of Pompano Beach have enacted similar resolutions.

Please thank Cape Coral’s Mayor and City Council for addressing this important issue.
