Rex the lizard rescued by Naples firefighters

Click here to view our photo of the week. The photo is of a City of Naples firefighter using a special oxygen mask to revive a Monitor lizard named Rex, while a young boy- the lizard’s guardian- watched intently. According to firefighters, a heat lamp in the lizard’s tank fell over sometime on Wednesday and ignited newspapers in the tank. Firefighters cleared the animal’s throat of soot and used an oxygen mask that the department had purchased specifically for use on animals. After 25 minutes, the lizard perked-up and is now doing O.K.
Our thanks to firefighter Travis Wright, Battalion Chief Pete DiMaria and the rest of the crew for saving Rex’s life! You can send your own thank-you to the City of Naples Bureau of Fire at: fire@naplesgov.com.

You Can Help
Recovery oxygen masks would make a great holiday gift for your local fire department. A kit of three masks (for large dogs, small dogs and one for cats) can be purchased for $60. Contact your local Fire Chief and ask if he or she would be interested in receiving the life-saving masks. Then contact ARFF and we’ll help you to purchase the masks.
