Dog track looks to poker in hopes of reversing its sinking fortunes
December 9th, 2008 by admin
The Pensacola Greyhound Track is one of the lowest-performing greyhound tracks in Florida (only the Jefferson County Kennel Club has brought in less money so far in 2008). Greyhound racing is a dying sport (literally!), so it is not surprising that the track is looking to add poker cardrooms as a way to keep its doors open.
On Thursday, December 11, the Escambia County Commission will hold a public hearing to consider, once again, allowing cardrooms at the greyhound dog track (the issue was previously brought before the commission in 2007, when it was voted down). If this proposal passes, dog races will be subsidized with thousands of dollars in casino gambling profits, ensuring that the cruelty of dog racing will continue for years to come.
You Can Help
1. If you live near Pensacola, please try to attend the public hearing and speak against allowing cardroom gaming in Escambia County. The meeting will be held on Thursday, December 11, beginning at 5:30pm at the Escambia County Governmental Complex, 221 Palafox Place, downtown Pensacola.2. If you live in or near Escambia County, or if you have visited the area as a tourist, please contact the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners and urge them not to support the proposal to allow poker cardrooms at pari-mutuel gaming facilites in the county.
