Vegetarians are strong!

The 17th annual Florida Senior Games State Championships wrap-up this weekend in Lee County after nine days of competition in 23 sports. Among the 2,000 athletes was 68-year-old (4-foot-10, 107-pound) powerlifter Joan Schmidt of Bonita Springs.
Joan won gold medals, and set records for her age group, in both the bench press and dead lifting events. In the dead lift (an exercise in which one lifts a barbell off the ground), she lifted 148.8 pounds.
In an article in the Naples News, Joan credited her success to “competitive zeal,” support from her husband and a healthy lifestyle that includes a vegetarian diet.
Next month, Joan is headed to Delaware for another competition and she has vowed to break her own records. Good luck Joan!
