Great news for greyhounds

Last night the Escambia County Commission voted 3-2 against a proposal that would have allowed poker at the Pensacola Greyhound Track. We would like to thank Commissioners Marie Young, Kevin White and Wilson Robertson for voting against the proposal. Commissioner Young said her vote was based on hearing from constituents. (Thank you to everyone who contacted the commission in response to our post from earlier in the week!)

Gerald Alcott, the director of racing at the track, said that it may not survive without a poker room. A few years ago, the remains of an estimated 3,000 greyhounds were discovered on the Alabama property of a former track security guard who told authorities he had been killing unwanted greyhounds with a .22-caliber rifle for decades. Most of the dogs were from the Pensacola Greyhound track. For these greyhounds, and for the thousands that meet similar fates each year in Florida, the end of dog racing can’t come soon enough.
