What happens when animals in the circus don’t feel like performing?

When it’s show time, what if an elephant or a tiger or a horse feels sick, tired or just stubborn? Most likely the animal will be forced to enter the ring. In a review of Saturday’s performance of Circus Sarasota, Sarasota Herald-Tribune columnist Jay Handelman wrote about the circus’ horses, “two of the animals clearly didn’t want to play Saturday night.”
If it was clear to the audience that the horses did not want to be there, it must have been obvious to the circus trainers. Sadly, “the show must go on.”
