A compassionate diet

Last May, federal immigration agents raided the nation’s largest kosher slaughterhouse in Postville, Iowa. The raid at Agriprocessors Inc. uncovered numerous problems- including the hiring of dozens of children, some as young as 13, to work long shifts at the plant. The slaughterhouse was already infamous following a PETA undercover investigation that documented the inhumane slaughter of cows (including the mutilation of still conscious animals after their throats had been cut).

With all this happening, Judy Lipman thought now would be a great time to try to convince her neighbors in Boca Raton’s Century Village to consider vegetarianism (she and her husband have been vegetarian for 15 years). “It should have been a wake-up call for all of us,” said Lipman in an article in Tuesday’s Sun-Sentinel.

The article also quoted local Rabbi Barry Silver, “The rationale behind keeping kosher has always been to spare the animal pain,” he said. “The practices now are the opposite: They are causing the animals to suffer. If you want to be true to your Jewish beliefs, you would become a vegetarian.”

Judy has had a column about vegetarianism printed in her community newspaper, but she said she has not met with much success yet. Still, we applaud her efforts. Good luck Judy!
