The 2009 legislative session began on Tuesday in Tallahassee. The biggest challenge facing legislators this year is fixing a billion dollar budget gap, and the House Finance and Tax Committee quickly got to work by discussing whether to continue dozens of sales tax exemptions that were added over the years to benefit various industries. Among the tax exemptions under review are the following:

  • nets used by commercial fisheries;
  • generators used on poultry farms;
  • fuel used to heat the huge warehouses in which chickens raised for meat (broilers) are confined;
  • bait used by commercial fishermen in the entrapment of lobsters, crabs and other crustacea;
  • feeds for poultry, ostriches, and livestock, including racehorses and dairy cows;
  • the sale of racing dogs by his or her owner/breeder.

We hope these ridiculous tax breaks get the ax!

Besides the budget, legislators will also be considering several important animal-related bills, including legislation to outlaw sexual abuse of animals, to crack down on the commercial breeding of dogs, and to strengthen protections for animals at dog and horse racing tracks.
