Animals need your help in Tallahassee!

Last week, the 60-day 2009 legislative session reached the halfway mark. So far, several important animal protection bills have made progress. But there is a lot more work to be done!
Legislation to protect animals from sexual predation (House Bill 273 and Senate Bill 448) has been unanimously approved by committees in both the State House and State Senate, but must be heard by additional committees before a vote in the full House or Senate. (On Monday, S448 will be discussed in the Senate Judiciary Committee.)
Sadly, last week we learned of another incident involving the sexual abuse of animals (“Women had sex with dogs, police say,” Sarasota Herald Tribune).
If you have not already done so, please contact your state senator and state representative and ask that they support S273 and HB448, “Sexual Activities Involving Animals.”

Other important bills will also receive hearings next week, including Senate Bill 2002, which would discourage the large-scale commercial breeding of dogs by prohibiting the private possession of 50 or more unsterilized dogs, and Senate Bill 288, which would strengthen Florida’s “Pet Lemon Law.”
