False eyelashes - direct from the fur farm

Look just like Madonna or Jennifer Lopez! That’s the promise of a South Florida company called Aira Cosmetics that is marketing false eyelashes made from mink hairs. In an attempt to assuage the concerns of shoppers with a conscience, their website includes this disclaimer, “Mink Eyelashes are made of individually selected mink fur hairs that have been harvested by gently brushing live farm animals. Mink eyelashes are not cruel to animals in any way!”
Excuse us if we’re skeptical. There’s nothing gentle about a fur farm. But let’s imagine they’re telling the truth and this is how the eyelashes are produced. After spending months in cramped, wire cages in a fur farm, a suffering mink enjoys a few brief moments of gentle brushing… and then her neck is broken (or she is killed by other equally gruesome methods).
What Aira Cosmetics is really saying is, ‘We don’t kill the mink. We just put money in the pockets of the fur farmers who treat mink horribly before killing them.’
ARFF has sent a letter to Aira Cosmetics challenging them to identify the fur farm where the mink are “gently brushed.” We’d like to see the conditions for mink on this farm. But we’re not holding our breath. Last week when New Times Broward-Palm Beach’s “The Juice” blog inquired about “the mysterious mink hair-brushing industry,” the company failed to respond.
But there is positive news! Until recently the eyelashes came in 3 styles: short, medium and long. But Aira Cosmetics has announced a new product, “Faux Mink Lashes.” These synthetic lashes are “soft as silk” and they’re a bargain compared to the real mink lashes.
Please send a polite e-mail to Aira Cosmetics and ask the company to discontinue it’s business relationship with the cruel fur industry. Suggest that they focus on synthetic lashes instead.
