Bucky Dennis: slob hunter

hammerhead.jpgClyde “Bucky” Dennis enjoys killing animals. He has become known for hooking very large sharks, fighting them to exhaustion, then drawing the shark close to his boat and killing the suffering animal. Then he weighs the corpse, takes some photos and figures out what to do with the animals remains.

On Tuesday, Mr. Dennis killed a 1,060-pound hammerhead shark in the waters off of Boca Grande. He told Fort Myers’ NBC Ch. 2 that “he doesn’t know what he’ll do with his latest catch.”

In 2006, Bucky killed an even larger shark, a female who was pregnant with 55 shark pups. She was estimated to be over 40 years old. An employee of a local fish company described the scene when the shark was brought to the dock, “Most of the women and a lot of the men were upset to see such a large, wonderful creature end up like this.”

We’ve bemoaned the fact before on this blog, but for some reason the killing of large sharks never fails to grab the media’s attention. Please contact NBC Ch. 2 in Fort Myers and urge the station to stop glorifying cruel and wasteful killings of sharks. Explain that sharks are magnificent creatures who are essential to the ocean ecosystem.

I am horrified that Bucky Dennis is out there slaughtering sharks for no reason. Someone needs to hook him, work him to exhuastion and then wonder if they should mount his remains. Trophies are stupid.

Maybe Bucky can proudly tell his grandchildren someday, when the Great Hammerheads are gone, how helped in their demise. There is no purpose to kill that shark. I doubt it helps his guide business, the number of “morons” who would sign on with that type of guide is small and, thankfully, getting smaller.

Your worst nightmare….You are a moron. Show me the last time a hammerhead shark attacked and killed a person. JACKASS!!!

  5. on 19 May 2009 at 9:35 am your worst nightmare x3

Hey Jeff, Please go in the ocean and post a picture of you hanging out with the hammerhead, like maybe take a pic of you hugging it or something? because you know, they never killed anyone. I’m pretty sure the shark will show love to you. Do it, you wont.

I don’t care if “Bucky” knew the shark was pregnant or not!! It doesn’t make him any better of a person…He still killed something just for the joy of killing it!! Hunting is not a sport…it is the pathetic attempt for losers to feel superior by slaughtering unsuspecting animals. People who support the actions taken by Monsters like Mr. Dennis are devoid of a conscience and I pity them for their ignorance. This world would be a better place if everyone could just learn to RESPECT life, ALL LIFE, living in it.

Your Worst Nightmare - you are the environment’s worst nightmare. Are you so stupid that you cannot understand that by killing off a species that you are taking one more link out of our survival? Just because it’s a shark does not mean it’s a killer, and even if it was, that species was on this earth millions of years before we were. Just because you don’t like something or you’re afraid of it you want to kill it. You’re a self-involved moron. Go open a book and learn something.

You people are just plain ignorant worrying about a fisherman “killing” a pregnant shark when your opinions & comments should be aimed at something REAL in this world : children been abducted, people getting murdered, world hunger, etc. etc.
You all need to respect HUMANS more than some animal you will never be able to swim with or enjoy. Wake up - & get a life.

Worst nightmare indeed. Typical ignorant attitude of the uninformed. I’ve been around sharks many times in the ocean, including a hammerhead and they have never shown any interest beyond mild curiosity. Humans are and always will be the most senseless and pointless predators on this planet…’bucky-boy’ the Florida red-neck being an prime example. Personally I hope he dies a horrible death.

Mr. Dennis, you are a creep. You should be made to eat the entire shark.

I am an animal lover, I find them quite delicious! Although I don’t hunt or fish (I’m confident enough to purchase my meat from the butcher), I’ll gladly kill any animal with more teeth than me. Sharks and snakes are high on my list. So are opossums, but only because they’re just big rats.

I am an animal lover, and I do find them delicious as well. I have fished the pass and enjoy eating the fish I catch. But to enjoy eating a tasty animal for years to come, you must promote the sustainability of that animal and the ecosystem from which it comes. To kill another shark of that size to prove to yourself and the world that you are a great fisherman seems pointless and senseless.

Mosquitos and fleas have killed more people than sharks have. Strictly speaking, it’s the diseases mosquitos and fleas carry that have done the killing, but you get the idea.
Unless an ecologist convinced me otherwise, I’d be happier in a world free of mosquitos and fleas.
You might be wondering where I’m going with this. I certainly am!
I think almost all shark fisherman (except Mr. Dennis) should release all sharks. I don’t know if the environment would go whacko if sharks became very rare, but I know I would be sad. They are wonderful creatures, just ask one. I’m not some person who’s romanticing an animal he knows nothing about; sharks are a big part of my life.
There are jaw sets (old!) hanging on my wall, 2 50# class outfits, and 130# class outfit leaning on my bookcase. I shark fish 25-30 times each year . I’ve also been in the water with big ones and been scared as hell.
Of course sharks dangerous, but so are big dogs (except mine), cars, powertools, thunderstorms, in laws, slippery sidewalks,…
So save the sharks for the future of our planet, but most of all, for me.
