Soy milk to the rescue

silk.jpg“Soy milk keeps Jacksonville company in business” was the title of a story in Thursday’s Florida Times-Union newspaper. In 2003, WhiteWave Foods*, producers of the Silk brand of soymilk, purchased a factory in downtown Jacksonville that had been scheduled to close. A third of its work force had been laid off. Since then, buoyed by growth in the market for soy-based foods and beverages, the factory has hired 20 new employees and now operates 24 hours a day/7 days a week. At the factory, tractor trailers deliver soybeans and leave with millions of gallons of soy milk each year.

We believe that soy milk and other dairy alternatives are the way of the future. It’s nice to know that drinking soy milk not only avoids the suffering of the dairy industry and provides all the calcium and other nutrients we need, but also helps Florida’s economy.

*It is important to note that WhiteWave Foods is a subsidiary of Dean Foods, America’s largest dairy company.
