Activists stand up for much-maligned alligators

Saturday was opening day of Florida’s annual alligator hunt. Hunter’s arriving with their airboats at the Belle Glade Marina were greeted by protesters from the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. In an article about the protest in the Sun-Sentinel, ARFF spokesperson Don Anthony gave a blunt description of the hunt, “It’s bloody, it’s brutal and barbaric and it’s not necessary.” Click here to read the Sentinel’s report and to view video from the protest.
Update: ARFF has received a positive response from The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) concerning our request that the FWC discourage the use of chickens or other live animals as bait during the alligator hunt (see below). The director of the FWC’s Division of Hunting and Game Management assured us that “when questions arise about the use of live bait” during future alligator hunting orientation classes, participants will be informed about Florida’s cruelty to animals statute.
