This weekend, the Cole Bros. Circus begins its yearly trip through Florida with three days of performances in the parking lot of Pensacola’s University Mall.

colebros.jpgToday’s Pensacola News Journal profiled The Toprasta Troupe, an act from this year’s show. The family aerialists are known for a “death-defying seven-man pyramid on the high wire.” The show also includes the “Globe of Death” (motorcycles in a steel globe), The Human Cannonball, clowns and acrobats. It’s not surprising that the newspaper failed to mention the circus’ boring, depressing animal acts. This year Cole Bros. is traveling with three female Asian elephants and a few camels.

The elephants- Viola, Libby and Nina- are “trained” by Louie Del Moral. There’s a video on YouTube from a Cole Bros. show a few weeks ago (click here) which shows one of the elephants continuously swaying back and forth. Such abnormal, “stereotypic” behavior is believed to be a reaction to boredom or severe stress, and is often found in animals confined in farms, laboratories, circuses and zoos.

You Can Help
Please contact the University Mall and urge them not to allow the circus to set up its big top at the mall in the future, unless the circus discontinues its cruel animal acts.

In Pensacola, the Cole Bros. Circus is “presented” by the Pensacola News Journal. Please contact the newspaper and let them know that it is inappropriate for the paper to support a for-profit business known for the confinement and abuse of elephants and other animals.

Later in October, Cole Bros. will perform in Panama City, Tallahassee and Mary Esther. Please contact ARFF if you are interested in joining demonstrations against the circus in Florida.
