A politician helps out his four-legged constituents

Budget talks this year in Hernando County were difficult. Commissioners struggled to find ways to save money and balance the budget. The story is the same in communities across the state. In Hernando County, county departments had their budgets trimmed, and commissioners voted to require a group of employees to take an unpaid, 10-day vacation. In response, the Hernando Today newspaper challenged commissioners to also take a 5% pay cut (roughly $3,000) in solidarity with the workers. Four of the five commissioners said they would, but Commission Chairman Dave Russell, Jr. deserves a sloppy kiss for writing his $3,000 check to Hernando County Animal Services.
