We love letter writers!

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: taking advantage of your local paper’s letters page is a great way to spread pro-animal messages.

For example, Saturday’s Sarasota Herald-Tribune included a letter by Gundl Bhutani that encouraged readers to avoid foie gras. “Foie gras, touted as a gourmet delicacy to entice the palate, is really the diseased tissue of a tortured, sick animal,” wrote Gundl. “When you consider what these birds must endure — and the many other food choices available — it seems that promoting foie gras reflects human indulgence at its worst.”

In the St. Augustine Record, letters concerning horse-drawn carriages- written in response to an article about ARFF’s presentation before the St. Augustine City Commission (see below post)- were published in the paper on Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

In his letter, Mark Klang noted, “it’s dangerous to have horses that are barely moving on the same road with cars zipping by at 45 mph…. For the safety of people as well as horses, get them out of traffic.”

Local resident Alan Freed wrote, “horses are subjected to injury, extreme heat and humidity, and toxic pollution.” Alan ended his letter by asking, “What happens to these horses when they no longer are able to ‘produce a profit?’”

Carla Wilson put the ball in the city’s court with her letter, “Now that St. Augustine City Commissioners are aware of accidents, injured tourist and injured locals, as well as injured horses, will they take a stand and ban horse-drawn carriages from city streets?”

Thanks to these letters, thousands of readers were educated about the cruelty of foie gras and the dangers of horse-drawn carriages.

Please spread animal-friendly messages by writing letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Contact ARFF for tips on writing successful letters.
