Tuesday morning in Daytona Beach, a house owned by a woman trying to care for an estimated 80 cats caught fire. Sadly, nine cats died in the fire.

Having 80 cats in a house not only is illegal in Daytona Beach, it is not a healthy or safe place for humans or animals. While people who collect animals are usually well-meaning, they frequently cannot properly provide the necessary food and veterinary care for the animals. This particular woman started out feeding and adopting a few cats, but ended up over her head as word spread and people dumped more and more cats in front of her house.

The problem can be traced to irresponsibility. If people had their dogs and cats spayed and neutered, the overpopulation problem would not exist.

You Can Help
If you know someone who has a dog or cat, politely ask if their animal has been neutered. If not, explain the reasons why this step should be taken. And of course, always encourage people to adopt, rather than buy, a companion animal. Buying an animal from a pet shop or breeder means another will be bred to take its place. Adopting means you are part of the solution, not the problem.
