Congratulations are in order

It is one of the best beginnings to a newspaper column that we’ve read in a long time. Dan Moffett has been writing for the Palm Beach Post for more than 20 years. His column in Monday’s paper began with a wonderful statement, “I am proud to announce that, beginning today, I will live the rest of my life as a vegetarian.”
Dan explained that he has had “false starts” with vegetarianism before, but this time he’s sure it’s going to stick. For Dan, a recent story in The New York Times about E. coli poisoning and the dangers of eating ground beef (more specifically, the risk of eating ground beef contaminated with cow feces) affirmed his commitment.
Dan now describes himself as “an aspiring vegetarian and recovering carnivore.” Congratulations Dan!
(Writing a Letter to the Editor of the Palm Beach Post would be a great way to support Dan and encourage others to follow his example. Click here to send a letter.)

Two South Florida students have been named finalists in this year’s Cool vs Cruel fashion design competition. The annual competition, sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States and The Art Institutes, celebrates fur-free, animal-friendly fashions.
Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale fashion design student Gilberto Alvarez was selected for his black and white vinyl cocktail dress with embellishments of silver rings and synthetic hair. Beatriz Lopez will represent Miami International University of Art & Design with her faux-fur zebra print coat. “As a young designer, I feel that it is my responsibility to find alternatives to using fur,” Lopez said.
The two students are among a group of 16 who will compete for the top prize nationally. The winner in the national competition will be flown to New York City for an awards ceremony in November. Good luck Gilberto and Beatriz!
