A few weeks ago, the City of Wilton Manors became the latest municipality in Florida to restrict the chaining of dogs outdoors during the day.

At their September 12 meeting, the City Commission voted unanimously to pass a law that limits the confinement or tethering of an animal outdoors to 15 minutes between the hours of 10am and 5pm.

Wilton Manors joins the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Dania, Hollywood, Oakland Park and Pembroke Park in restricting the chaining of dogs during the day. Orange County and Palm Beach County have similar ordinances (Okaloosa County prohibits the chaining of dogs entirely!).

Continuous chaining is bad for dogs. Dogs are very social animals who suffer from isolation. Chained dogs are much more likely to become aggressive. In addition, dogs confined on chains are at risk of becoming tangled and injured, are more likely to have skin problems and problems with parasites, and are often exposed to bad weather.
